Richard Carroll

Richard Carroll directed Calamity Jane at Hayes Theatre Co in 2017 starring Virginia Gay, and the 2016 Australian premiere of the musical Side Show, also at Hayes Theatre Co. He is the co-creator and director of The Show Goes On starring Bernadette Robinson, which premiered at Sydney Opera House in August 2017.

With Elise McCann, Richard co-wrote the shows Everybody Loves Lucy (Adelaide Cabaret Festival, Hayes Theatre Co & two national tours), and Dahlesque (Adelaide Cabaret Festival & Melbourne Symphony Orchestra). He wrote and directed the cabaret show ¡Hispanic Attack! for Ryan Gonzalez, and co-wrote and directed Don’t Bother To Knock for Helen Dallimore. For Neglected Musicals he has directed presentations of Calamity Jane in August 2016 and Mame in June 2017. He directed the Opening Concert for the performing arts centre The Art House on the NSW Central Coast in May 2016, and the Opening Variety Gala for the 2017 Adelaide Cabaret Festival.

As part of Luckiest Productions, Richard has produced the musicals Sweet Charity (Hayes Theatre Co, Sydney Opera House, Arts Centre Melbourne and tour) and Miracle City (Hayes Theatre Co), as well as additional production on the Australian tour of Little Shop of Horrors in 2016. Sweet Charity won 3 Helpmann Awards and 3 Sydney Theatre Awards including Best Musical; Miracle City won 2 Sydney Theatre Awards. Richard also produced High Society in 2015 for Hayes Theatre Co, and both Side Show and Calamity Jane as One Eyed Man Productions.

He was the Assistant Director of Violet (winner of 3 Sydney Theatre Awards, including Best Director and Best Independent Musical) and High Society. The cabaret show Julie Madly Deeply which he co-conceived and produced has had an Australian tour, Canadian tour, UK national tour and a West End season. He also co-wrote and was Associate Producer of the 2010 documentary David Campbell On Broadway for FOXTEL.

Cabaret and concert producing credits include: For Luckiest Productions, An Evening with Megan Mullally (Sydney Theatre for Mardi Gras Festival, and The Forum Melbourne); Britney Spears: The Cabaret (Sydney and Melbourne seasons, and two national tours); Everybody Loves Lucy; Cabaret Whore; Simply Barbra; Gillian Cosgriff’s Waitressing, and other things I do well; When I Fall in Love: The Nat King Cole Story; Show Stoppers; Daniel Boys in So Close; Mad Men star Bryan Batt in Batt on a Hot Tin Roof; and five national tours for David Campbell. As One Eyed Man Productions: Mario; Julie Madly Deeply; and Tom Sharah in It’s Raining Me and That 90’s Show.

As Executive Producer: Freud’s Last Session (QPAC); and for Luckiest Productions Snow White: Winter Family Musical (State Theatre Sydney); and Diamonds Are For Trevor (State Theatre Sydney for Mardi Gras Festival). As part of Luckiest Productions he worked on programming for the Adelaide Cabaret Festival 2009-11.

Richard sits on the board of In The Pipeline (Arts) Ltd, which runs Hayes Theatre Co in Sydney. He is also a member of the artistic assessment panel for New Musicals Australia, and the cabaret panel for the Helpmann Awards.
